A Yorkshire-based skincare brand, launched in 2018 by Nic Taylor, built around a patented ingredient called Silver Chitoderm.
47 Skin is a British skincare brand with a small core range of cleansers, serums and masks. Its bestsellers include the Anti-Blemish and Scar Repair Serum, the Everyday Cleanser and the Silver Mask, all built around an ingredient called Silver Chitoderm. The brand says this compound hydrates skin while removing 99.9% of the bacteria that cause breakouts, and says its products are made in the UK. It sells direct to customers and has also appeared at the beauty counters of Browns of York. The Sunday Times Hundred listed it in both 2023 and 2024.
Founder Nic Taylor struggled with his skin for most of his adult life. Regional press tell how his grandmother sent him a cream she had bought on a Huddersfield market stall, and it improved his skin. The active ingredient had been developed by Yorkshire scientists during a water purification project and then set aside. Mr Taylor spent a year tracking down the scientist, who was only a couple of hours away, and together they patented the formula and launched 47 Skin in 2018. Regional press report that the company has grown without a large marketing budget or celebrity backing.
In his own words the philosophy is "use good science, make it simple, and stay transparent". The brand says it wants to offer high-performance, simplified routines for real people, and to help them feel comfortable in their skin. It also says it avoids over-promising. These are the company's statements as reported by newspapers.
The company is based in Yorkshire. The Sunday Times Hundred 2024 list gives York, and the regional press say the science came from Yorkshire and the company is still based in the North. We did not find an address, team size or the number of staff, and we did not find a description of the working culture beyond the founder's story. The articles name only Mr Taylor and the unnamed scientist, so we cannot describe the wider team.
A skincare company of this kind needs people in product development and quality control who work with laboratories and manufacturers, regulatory specialists who check that claims and ingredients meet UK rules, marketing, social media and content creators, customer care staff, and warehouse, finance and operations teams. If you enjoy chemistry, biology or the idea of turning a science discovery into a product people use every day, this is a good example of how it can happen. Check the brand's website for openings.
