A London-based music technology company that provides streaming, download and white-label music services to other businesses.
7digital is a business-to-business music technology company. Instead of selling music to the public under its own name, it provides the technology and music licences that other companies use to add music to their own products. Its offer includes an API, white-label streaming, radio services and download stores. Wikipedia says it serves areas such as fitness, social media and gaming, and names clients including Barry's and Triller.
Its stated mission on a job-site profile is "To power unique, exciting and engaging music experiences for brands and innovators worldwide", and it says its catalogue covers over 80 million licensed tracks. Its history shows what it set out to do: it was founded in 2004 by Ben Drury and James Kane to build music download stores for record labels, brands and retailers. In September 2008 it became the first European company to launch DRM-free MP3 downloads with all four major record labels, which made music easier for ordinary listeners to own and use.
7digital is headquartered at 69 Wilson Street, London EC2A 2BB, per Wikipedia. The company became 7digital Group Plc after a 2014 reverse takeover of UBC Media. We flag that it is ACQUIRED: by Songtradr (2023), but it still operates under the 7digital name. A job-site profile places the office in Finsbury, London and says 21 to 100 people work there, and Wikipedia reports about 70 employees as of 2021 (dated). That profile lists weekly Show 'n Tell events, flexible working with core hours, support for carers and parents, 25 to 30 days' holiday, up to three paid volunteering days a year and pension matching up to 3 percent, which are the company's own claims. Chief executive Paul Langworthy previously worked at Universal Music Group. and it lists subsidiaries branded 7digital Creative, which it says produce radio content for BBC stations, a claim marked as needing a citation.
Past API partners have included Samsung, BlackBerry, Onkyo and musical.ly, which became TikTok. That shows how a London team can support well-known brands without being a consumer name itself. Teams in a business like this include software developers, music licensing and catalogue specialists, account managers who work with partners, and audio production staff.
It is a useful example of how the music industry depends on behind-the-scenes technology. We did not read its own website, so check 7digital.com for what it says about its current teams and services.
