Ably

A realtime infrastructure company that gives developers the tools to build live chat, notifications and collaboration. It has UK staff and was founded by Matthew O'Riordan and Paddy Byers.

About Ably

Ably builds the technology behind "live" features in apps and websites: chat, live scores, notifications, collaborative editing and live dashboards. Developers add Ably to their products so that updates arrive instantly and reliably. Its products include Pub/Sub, Chat, AI Transport, LiveObjects and Spaces. Customers named on its site include HubSpot, NASCAR and Webflow, and the Australian Open has used it to deliver real-time data.

Ably was founded by Matthew O'Riordan, the chief executive, and Dr Paddy Byers, the chief technology officer. A blog post by O'Riordan, dated March 2016, announced that Ably was production-ready after about three years of work. He explains that he and his co-founder had sold Econsultancy, a previous company, and that he began building Ably after finding that existing messaging services lost data and connections. The pages we read do not say where Ably was founded or is headquartered.

Ably describes its principles as reliable, global and scalable systems, and its engineering values include behaviour that is deterministic and consistent. Its careers page says it puts "developers first" and wants people who "obsess over customers". It publishes a UK benefits pack for its employees, which indicates a UK-based team.

For young people, Ably is a good example of a small, deeply technical company building infrastructure that millions of people use without noticing. We did not find a published graduate or internship scheme, so check its careers page.
