telephony and voice technology company · Telecommunications & Mobile Networks

Aculab

A Milton Keynes company, founded in 1978, that makes voice and telephony technology, from phone-network hardware to cloud tools that let developers add calling to software.

About Aculab

Aculab makes the technology that helps voice calls move between different kinds of phone networks. Its products include gateways that connect old telephone systems to modern internet-based ones, boards that process speech and media inside servers, and Aculab Cloud, a platform launched in 2011 that lets developers add voice, fax, text messages and speech recognition to their own apps. It also offers VoiSentry, a system that recognises a speaker by their voice, and tools that can detect answering machines. Aculab says it has over 1,000 customers in more than 80 countries.

Wikipedia says Alan Pound founded the company in 1978. It started as a design consultancy in the music industry, then built interfaces and controllers for computer equipment. From 1988 it made analogue speech-processing systems, with British Telecom as an early client, and in the early 1990s it shipped its first E1 cards, which connect computers to digital phone lines. In December 2024 it was acquired by Enghouse Holdings UK Limited, part of Enghouse Systems. Aculab's site says it emphasises product integration, technical expertise and customer service, and that it helps customers bridge older and newer systems, with support "24/7, 365 days a year".

Aculab's headquarters and research and development are in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, according to Wikipedia, with a branch office in Norwood, Massachusetts, in the United States. Its website holds ISO 27001 security certification and other quality marks. We did not find a count of UK staff or a list of other UK sites, and the company's own about page did not name Milton Keynes.

The pages we read said very little about Aculab's culture or its people. What they do show is a company that has lasted more than 45 years in a fast-changing industry, which usually means it has kept engineers who know both the old telephone systems and the modern internet ones. We did not find staff stories, so you may want to ask about working life if you meet the team at an event.

A telecoms technology firm like this employs hardware and embedded software engineers, cloud and API developers, support engineers who help customers around the clock, and test engineers who check that calls work on every network. It also needs product managers, sales and technical sales staff, and finance and operations teams. Electronics, computing and networking all lead into this field, and the Milton Keynes location suits people who want technical work outside London.
