About AECOM UK

AECOM is an infrastructure consultancy. In the UK its people plan, design, engineer and manage the delivery of projects in transport, water, environment, energy and buildings. It describes itself as the global infrastructure leader, committed to delivering a better world. Its services run from early advice and planning through design and engineering to programme and construction management, which means keeping big projects on time, on budget and safe. UK clients include public bodies such as local authorities, the NHS and national agencies, as well as private companies.

AECOM's best-known UK programme is High Speed Two. On the first phase, London to Birmingham, its page says it provided multidisciplinary engineering, environmental design, systems integration and cost estimating, did the preliminary design for Birmingham Interchange Station, produced the concept design for Old Oak Common Station, and was main designer for the overhead line equipment. More than 250 specialists across 13 environmental disciplines contributed to what it calls the largest and most complex environmental impact statement undertaken in the UK. It also led work on the Birmingham to Manchester and Birmingham to Sheffield legs before the later phases were cancelled by government. We found no formal mission statement beyond its description of itself. Its Europe and India chief executive, Colin Wood, spoke in 2023 of driving sustainable change and of staff making a meaningful impact in their city region.

AECOM's UK footprint is spread across the country. Its company profile lists Belfast, Croydon, London, Merton and Wimbledon Park, and recent job postings also mention Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Norwich, St Albans and Glasgow. In July 2023 it opened an office at 100 Embankment, Salford, which it said was home to about 580 staff, attended by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, with work including the Greater Manchester Bee Network walking and cycling improvements and the Golborne Station masterplan. A Glasgow office also opened in 2023. The company reports about 51,000 staff worldwide, but we could not find a current UK-only headcount.

On culture, AECOM calls its way of working Freedom to Grow, a hybrid model that it says aims for a culture of flexibility, trust and performance. The 2023 Salford office was redesigned to reflect local culture. These are the company's own descriptions. The wide range of work means that people are sought in engineering, ecology, built heritage, social value consulting, planning, cost management and project management.

Roles at AECOM include civil, rail, structural, aviation and electrical engineers, environmental scientists and ecologists, quantity surveyors, who work out what projects will cost, project managers, digital and data specialists, and finance and business staff. If you like geography, maths, sciences, design or computing and want to see your work turn into stations, bridges, water works and public spaces, firms like this employ people with all those interests.
