AIG UK

The UK business of American International Group, a global insurer, with its head office at 58 Fenchurch Street in London and branch offices in Birmingham, Croydon, Manchester and Glasgow.

About AIG UK

AIG UK is part of American International Group, one of the world's largest commercial insurers. Its UK site says it offers risk solutions for businesses and individuals, including accident and health, casualty, cyber, financial lines, marine and property cover, backed by a global team of claims experts. The UK legal entity is American International Group (UK) Limited. Insurers like this take on the financial cost of things that go wrong, from a factory fire to a cyber attack, and pay out when they do.

AIG's story began in Shanghai. Cornelius Vander Starr founded it there on 19 December 1919 as an insurance agency, and it moved its headquarters to New York in 1939. After the Second World War it expanded into Japan, Germany and the rest of Europe, with offices in the UK from the late 1940s and early 1950s. AIG UK says it has more than 60 years of experience in this country and describes itself as a dynamic organisation with great cultural diversity. We did not find a UK-specific mission statement.

AIG UK's head office and registered address is the AIG Building at 58 Fenchurch Street, London EC3M 4AB. Its UK branch network includes Birmingham (Embassy House, Church Street), Croydon (Park Lane), Manchester (Deansgate) and Glasgow (St Vincent Street). The Birmingham site also hosts an e-trade service centre. An older Insurance Times profile from the early 2000s listed branches in Belfast, Bristol, Leeds, Reading and Watford too, but that is dated, so check which are open today. The UK is a major market for the group, and a 2012 Insurance Times interview with the then UK boss described it as AIG's third-largest operation, behind the US and Japan.

The same interview describes the company as more humble and hungry after the 2008 financial crisis, when the group needed government support, and says it was renamed Chartis for a period before returning to the AIG name. That is the then UK boss's view of the culture, not a current staff survey. AIG UK's website also says it publishes gender pay gap reports, and the company sits within a group that operates in more than 200 countries and jurisdictions.

An insurer of this size employs underwriters, who decide which risks to accept and at what price, as well as claims specialists, risk engineers, brokers' account managers, lawyers, actuaries, finance staff, technology teams and customer service staff. Its focus on multinational clients and large companies, plus lines such as professional indemnity, directors' and officers' liability and cyber, means many jobs involve working with a wide range of industries. Regional offices mean some of this work happens outside London, in Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Croydon.
