About Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen is a luxury fashion house that makes women's and men's clothing, shoes, bags and accessories. It is known for sharp British tailoring, dramatic runway shows and detailed craft. The house's own description is that its collections combine British tailoring with the finesse of French haute couture and the finish of Italian ready-to-wear. Its designs are built on contrasts, such as fragility and strength, and tradition and innovation.

Lee Alexander McQueen founded the house in 1992. Before that he trained with the Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard and Gieves & Hawkes, then worked for the theatrical costumiers Angels and Berman's, and completed a master's in fashion design at Central Saint Martins. The stylist Isabella Blow bought his entire graduate collection. After his death in 2010, Sarah Burton, who had joined the company straight after her own Central Saint Martins degree in 1997, took over as creative director and led the house for 13 years. The house's website says its guiding idea is community: people taking time to think, talk and make things together. That is the company's own wording.

In the UK, the key place we could confirm is the flagship store on Old Bond Street, London, opened in 2019. Sarah Burton designed it with architect Smiljan Radic, over three floors. The top floor shows emerging talent and archive pieces, and has hosted exhibitions called Unlocking Stories and Roses. The brand has strong London roots: the retrospective Savage Beauty was staged in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and in 2015 at the V&A in London, where it became the museum's most visited show. We could not confirm the location of its design studios or head office from the pages we read.

The house's culture has been shaped by the idea of craft and community. When Sarah Burton left in 2023, she described the McQueen team as her "family". A fashion report said she moved the label toward more wearable collections while keeping its craftsmanship, and one of her autumn 2013 outfits took about two weeks to make, close to couture. The 2020 womenswear collection used Northern Irish linen from farm to finished cloth and embroideries based on sketches by Central Saint Martins MA students, showing a link with art schools.

A house like this employs pattern cutters, tailors, embroiderers and seamstresses in its ateliers, designers and design assistants, buyers and merchandisers, retail teams in London shops, and people in digital, communications, supply chain, finance and legal teams. Many designers in the industry come through London art and fashion schools, and the company's own site lists current roles.
