Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm that describes itself as hands-on, fact-driven and action-oriented. Its teams help organisations with problems such as a business in financial trouble (restructuring and turnaround), a legal or regulatory case (disputes and investigations), working out what a business is worth (valuation), deals (transaction advice), tax, and making companies run better. The firm says it has more than 11,000 professionals in over 40 countries.
Tony Alvarez and Bryan Marsal founded the firm in 1983. Its history page says it grew into a national restructuring firm by 1999, launched a European turnaround practice in 2001, added performance improvement and business advisory in 2003, started a transaction advisory and private equity practice in 2005, and entered the Nordics in 2017. It describes its roots as being three employees at the start and now thousands more across a large global network. Its London office is the base for the UK graduate programmes we found.
We did not find a formal mission statement. The history page describes founding principles of "leadership, action and results" and a belief that "operational excellence is the heartbeat of growth for every company". Its listed values are Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward and Inclusive Diversity, and it says its culture celebrates "independent thinkers and doers".
The best-known project on its history page is the 2008 appointment to lead Lehman Brothers' global wind-down, after the bank collapsed. The firm says its clients include law firms, over half of the Fortune 100 (the biggest US companies) and many private equity firms. Its valuations team says it helps clients "understand, protect and maximise value", and works on portfolio valuations, deal and investment analysis, restructuring, litigation, financial reporting and tax valuations, sometimes with European colleagues. That team has offices in London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Munich, Paris and Madrid.
Early-careers evidence is dated. London graduate programmes have been advertised in areas including valuations, restructuring and insolvency, disputes and investigations, executive compensation, indirect tax and tax. The Valuations programme lasts three years with study towards the CFA qualification. Requirements were a 2:1 or higher, ABB at A-level or equivalent (some exceptions), UK work eligibility, intermediate Excel and Word, and business-level English; no valuation experience was needed. The listing did not state pay and closed on 3 February 2026. The firm describes friendly, inclusive, entrepreneurial teams, structured training and mentoring and live project work from day one.
