Arqiva

A UK communications infrastructure company that carries much of the country's TV and radio signal and runs smart-meter networks for utilities.

About Arqiva

Arqiva provides the infrastructure behind television, radio and streaming, and the connected networks that help utilities manage water and energy. For broadcasters it operates a network of around 1,500 radio and television transmission sites, and Wikipedia says it runs most of the UK's TV and radio transmitters, including those used by the BBC and many commercial stations. It also runs digital radio (DAB) services. For utilities it offers smart water metering, managed sensors, managed connectivity, and data and analytics for water companies, gas networks and electricity network operators. Its own site says it has more than 700 customers worldwide.

Arqiva describes its purpose as providing infrastructure that supports everyday life across the UK. Its site sets out three culture goals: Accountability (keeping promises), One Arqiva (working as one team) and Curiosity (looking for better ways of doing things). The company traces its lineage to early British broadcasting, through the Independent Television Authority and the Independent Broadcasting Authority, and took the Arqiva name in 2005. In 2019 it sold its telecoms division, with its masts, to Cellnex, which now operates as Cellnex UK in this list.

Wikipedia gives its headquarters as Crawley Court in Hampshire, in the former Independent Broadcasting Authority building, and the transmission network is spread over the whole of the UK, from city masts to remote hilltop sites. Arqiva's careers pages describe flexible, hybrid working and say they welcome part-time roles and job-shares. The page we read does not list individual offices, so locations beyond the head office are not confirmed here.

On culture, Arqiva says it runs colleague networks including The Black Network, Pride and Spectrum, a network for neurodivergent colleagues. It says it puts the work ahead of the place where the work is done. Those are the company's own descriptions. Wikipedia gives a figure of about 775 employees after the 2008 merger with National Grid Wireless, but that is old and the company does not state a current headcount on the pages we read.

The roles involved reflect the mix of broadcasting and utilities work. There are transmission and network engineers, IP and satellite engineers who look after teleport and streaming links, software and data specialists who handle meter and sensor data, field engineers who maintain remote sites, and commercial, finance and people staff. If you like radio, television, electronics, data or the idea of working on something almost everyone in the UK uses without noticing, Arqiva is worth a look.
