A London technology company building digital broking and underwriting tools for specialty and commercial insurance.
Artificial Labs, which trades as Artificial, makes software for the specialty insurance world. Specialty insurance covers unusual or large risks, such as ships, big buildings or complex businesses, and in London much of it is arranged at Lloyd's. Brokers (who find cover for clients) and insurers (who take on the risk) have traditionally relied on emails, spreadsheets and phone calls. Artificial builds tools that let them trade digitally instead, so deals can be quoted and placed faster.
The company was founded in 2013 by David King and Johnny Bridges, and TechRound lists London as its home with an office in Warsaw, Poland, opened in 2015. David King has said he tried other industries before settling on insurance, and he is now co-chief executive. Artificial moved into a new London office at 1-3 Frederick's Place in 2025, and its own review of that year says the team spans the UK and Europe and welcomed 30 new joiners across engineering, design, product, legal and client roles.
Artificial describes its goal as "making insurance frictionless", and its own review of 2025 says it wants to be the go-to technology partner for leading brokers and carriers in the London market, "building the future of specialty insurance". An older podcast episode featuring David King carried the title "Organising the world's data", which gives a flavour of the original idea.
Its products, per its 2025 review, include Smart Placement, a configurable platform for brokers to run digital placement, and the Augmented Underwriting MGA, launched in July 2025, which combines an experienced underwriting team led by Dan Prince with Artificial's technology. (An MGA is a managing general agent, a business that underwrites on behalf of insurers.) It also launched an agentic innovation arm called AgLabs in November 2025. Named partners include McGill and Partners, which is building a digital placement platform with Artificial, Addresscloud, which supplies property data, and Apollo, with whom it renewed its Smart Follow automated-underwriting collaboration.
Artificial's own writing paints a playful culture, with puns, an offsite called "Partyficial", a summer barbecue and an office dog named Lola. The team raised £3,355 for the charity Mind by abseiling down the Lloyd's building (the company's own account). Roles range across engineering, design, product, legal and working with clients. We did not find a published graduate scheme or internship, so check the careers page for entry-level openings.
