About Ascot Group

Ascot is a specialty insurer and reinsurer. In insurance it writes financial lines such as cyber and professional liability, management liability, surety, marine and specialty, casualty and alternative risk solutions. In reinsurance it covers casualty, marine and energy, property and specialty treaty. It also has Leadline Capital Partners, which brings in outside investors, and a Bermuda reinsurance vehicle.

Ascot says it is a "perfect partner for a less-than-perfect world". Colleagues quoted on its 25th anniversary page describe disciplined underwriting combined with an entrepreneurial, agile approach, a flat culture where people pitch in across teams, a habit of taking ownership of problems, and proactive, relationship-focused claims handling. Those are the company's own staff accounts rather than independent findings.

The story begins in 2001, when Ascot launched Lloyd's Syndicate 1414 under Ascot Underwriting Limited. After the September 2001 attacks the team of about 20 started underwriting two months early. By 2003 it was writing ten lines in the market. It opened a Houston office in 2007 and a Bermuda office in 2014, and in 2016 the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board bought it. Ascot passed 500 employees around 2021 and by 2025 it said it had more than 1,100 employees worldwide. In 2026 it launched The Ascot Foundation, which focuses on health and wellness, education and the environment.

In the UK, Ascot's operation is centred on London. One colleague recalls that in 2008 the London office had fewer than 60 people, and when another joined in 2016 much of the business fitted on one floor of the Walkie-Talkie building. The UK has since grown through consortia and facilities, including the A2B Consortium, a vaccine cargo facility and a Ukraine grain export facility. Ian Thompson became UK chief executive in 2024. Ascot describes a "Golden Triangle" of London, Bermuda and the United States.

London-based leaders on the anniversary page include the Group Chief Risk Officer, Group Chief Claims Officer, the UK Chief Claims Officer and an executive underwriter for treaty business. This shows the range of roles in a specialty insurer: underwriting for each class, claims, risk, legal, finance, distribution and investment teams. The page does not give a UK headcount or an exact current London address, so check the Ascot website for its latest details.
