ATG Entertainment

One of the world's biggest live-theatre companies, run from Woking, with more than 60 UK theatres, ten West End venues, ticketing and show production.

About ATG Entertainment

ATG Entertainment, formerly the Ambassador Theatre Group, owns and runs theatres, sells tickets and produces shows. Wikipedia describes three linked activities: venue ownership and management, ticketing and marketing, and show production. In the UK it operates more than 60 venues, with different sections of Wikipedia saying more than 64 or more than 70, and examples include the Alexandra in Birmingham, Bristol Hippodrome, Edinburgh Playhouse, Liverpool Empire, Manchester Palace, Milton Keynes Theatre and Sunderland Empire. A 2015 article called it the world's number one live-theatre company.

ATG was co-founded by Sir Howard Panter and Dame Rosemary Squire; a 2015 article dates the company to 1992, while Wikipedia gives 1994 in its summary box and about 1992 in its history. Its first-hand mission and values were not found in the pages we read, so we have not invented any. What the sources do show is a focus on bringing shows to audiences in cities and towns across the country, as well as in the West End. Its production partners have included Jamie Lloyd Productions and Jerry Mitchell Productions, and its group partner is Sonia Friedman Productions, linked to titles such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The company is headquartered in Woking, Surrey, with other offices in London and overseas. In London the West End theatres listed by Wikipedia are the Ambassadors, Apollo Victoria, Fortune, Harold Pinter, Lyceum, Phoenix, Piccadilly, Playhouse, Savoy and Tom Stoppard (formerly the Duke of York's). Regional theatres listed in a 2015 article included Aylesbury, Bristol, Brighton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Oxford, Stoke-on-Trent and York. ATG Tickets provides ticketing for its UK theatres and runs the ATG Theatre Card scheme, launched in 2011.

Wikipedia reports about 11,000 employees in December 2022, a large number because theatres need front-of-house, bar, box office and technical staff on many sites, including part-time and seasonal workers. We found no first-party culture statement. Because the pages we read are partly dated, we recommend checking the company's website for how it describes its teams today. Wikipedia also reports that its ownership has changed and may change again, which we have left out.

The work is varied. In theatres there are box office, front-of-house, stage management, lighting and sound, marketing and general management roles. At head office there are programming, producing, ticketing, digital, finance, legal and people teams. Because ATG has venues in many UK towns and cities, a job with the company can be close to home as well as in London. If you like live performance, customer service or the business side of the arts, it is a good example of how a theatre company works.
