B Lab UK

The UK charity behind the B Corp movement, which certifies businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.

About B Lab UK

B Lab UK is a charity that leads the B Corp movement in the UK. A B Corp, or certified B Corporation, is a business that has been checked against standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. B Lab UK supports companies through the process, builds the community of certified businesses and campaigns for changes to how business is done. Its work areas are shifting corporate behaviour with tools such as the B Impact Assessment and SDG Action Manager, pushing for policy change through the Better Business Act coalition, and influencing culture through campaigns and events such as B Corp Month and Louder Than Words.

The global B Lab organisation was founded in 2006 in Pennsylvania in the United States by Andrew Kassoy, Bart Houlahan and Jay Coen Gilbert. Its pages say that a different kind of economy was "not only possible, it was necessary", with business that is "better for workers, better for communities, and better for the planet". Companies are assessed on five areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers, and must reach a minimum score to be certified. B Lab UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (number 1164694).

The UK has become one of the strongest centres of the movement. In 2022, B Lab UK reported that UK B Corp certifications had passed 1,000, with London home to more than 500 B Corps, the most of any city in the world, and others in Bristol, Manchester, Brighton, Edinburgh and Cardiff. The UK had 564 B Corps at the end of 2021. B Lab UK held a celebration for the first 1,000 UK B Corps at the Natural History Museum. We did not find B Lab UK's own office address on the pages we read, so we cannot say where its team sits.

Chris Turner is named as executive director in the 2022 report, and the organisation's pages describe a culture of community, shared stories and collective action across a global network. These are the organisation's own statements. We found no information on team size, working arrangements or values lists in the pages we read.

A charity like this needs assessors and standards specialists who review company applications, community and membership managers who support certified businesses, policy and campaigns staff who work with Parliament and coalitions, event and communications teams, and finance and operations colleagues. If you are interested in how business can be a force for good, subjects like business, economics, politics, environmental science and communications are all relevant.
