About Babcock International

Babcock International is a UK-headquartered company which describes itself as the aerospace, defence and security company. It works across marine, nuclear, land and aviation businesses and corporate functions, supporting equipment such as Royal Navy ships and submarines, nuclear facilities and aircraft. Its aviation work includes aircraft engineering for the Royal Air Force, for example at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire.

We did not find a separate mission statement on the pages we read. Babcock's chief executive David Lockwood said in 2024 that its early-careers programmes would give recruits "a career that makes a difference in the communities where they live". Its chief human resources officer said in 2021 that the programmes are designed to attract the next generation of talent and help people reach their potential in a varied, challenging career.

Babcock's early-careers pages list locations including Bristol, Plymouth (Devonport Royal Dockyard), HMNB Clyde, Rosyth, Warrington, Leicester, London and Portsmouth. Reports from earlier intakes also name Donnington. Babcock Technology Centre in Bristol is one of the engineering bases, and RAF Leeming is an aviation location. You do not need to be in the aviation business to join, as the intake also works on ships, submarines and nuclear sites.

Babcock's early-careers site shows profiles of dozens of graduates and apprentices, from project management and naval architecture to fabrication, welding and degree apprenticeships. In 2021 one apprentice, a single parent older than many apprentices, said she was helping Babcock develop how it supports single parents. Babcock also lists Armed Forces and inclusion commitments, but we did not find independent culture reviews.

The company reported 480 new apprentices and graduates in 2019, 353 in 2021 and said in December 2024 that it expected nearly 1,500 new apprentice and graduate roles across 2024 and 2025, including 253 graduate roles for 2025. It has also launched a year-long pre-apprenticeship scheme for people who want an alternative way in, with a guaranteed interview for a full apprenticeship afterwards. Apprenticeship routes include engineering design, fabrication, pipefitting, welding, mechanical and electrical fitting, CNC machining, aircraft engineering, and business roles such as finance and procurement. Pay, entry requirements and the dates of the current intake were not stated on the pages we read, and the figures above are dated, so check Babcock's careers site.
