About Bad Wolf

Bad Wolf is an independent television production company that makes big, ambitious drama. Its shows include His Dark Materials, A Discovery of Witches, Industry, I Hate Suzie and The Night Of, and from 2023 it has co-produced Doctor Who. It also made Tales of the TARDIS, Red Eye, Lady in the Lake, Dope Girls and The Other Bennet Sister. It says it has made over 70 hours of high-end drama, and its shows have won BAFTA, BAFTA Cymru, RTS, Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

In its own words, Bad Wolf was set up in 2015 to make "ambitious, imaginative and relevant drama for the global TV marketplace". It was founded by Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner, who had worked together for more than 15 years. Their story began when they helped bring Doctor Who back to Cardiff with showrunner Russell T Davies, which helped spark a boom in Welsh television drama. Before Bad Wolf they led BBC Worldwide Productions and Adjacent Productions in Los Angeles.

Bad Wolf is based in South Wales, with its head office in Cardiff and a team that also has a London presence. It founded Wolf Studios Wales, a film and television studio in Cardiff that opened in 2017. It also supports Screen Alliance Wales, a training scheme for new talent. Sony Pictures Television bought a majority stake in 2021, and Bad Wolf still works under its own name from Wales.

Bad Wolf says it wants to strengthen Wales's creative community through partnerships and training, and has brought international producers, directors and actors to work there. The leadership team on its site includes Jane Tranter as chief executive, Natasha Hale as chief operating officer, Ryan Rasmussen as chief creative officer, Dan McCulloch as director of content and Emily Russell as director of production. These are the company's own descriptions of itself.

A drama company employs many kinds of people, not only writers and directors. Its team pages list legal and business affairs, production, script and creative development, and finance. The studio side adds roles in building and running a working film and TV site. If you like the idea of working on shows made in Wales for a worldwide audience, it is worth following the company and its Screen Alliance Wales work to see what is current. Bad Wolf's shows and plans listed on Wikipedia also include upcoming projects such as Berlin Noir, Jupiter Island, The Lords' Day and a series with Dakota Fanning, all still to be confirmed.
