The UK and Ireland business of Dutch group Royal BAM, covering BAM Construct UK, BAM Nuttall and specialist units that build schools, hospitals, railways, bridges and defence sites.
BAM UK and Ireland is part of the Royal BAM Group, a construction and property company that says it has been active for over 150 years. In the UK it is organised into BAM Construct UK, which builds buildings and is based in Hemel Hempstead, BAM Nuttall, which does civil engineering and infrastructure, and a group of specialist units including BAM FM, BAM Ritchies, BAM Site Solutions, BAM Plant and BAM Energy. Its website lists eight capabilities, including construction, infrastructure, design, facilities management, ground engineering and energy solutions, and eight sectors such as schools and universities, healthcare, transport, nuclear and defence, aviation and the energy transition.
BAM Nuttall is one of the oldest names in British civil engineering. James Nuttall senior founded it in Manchester in 1865, doing road and sewer work, and it later worked on the Manchester Ship Canal and the Mersey Queensway Tunnel. Over the years its projects have included the Dartford, Tyne and Medway tunnels, High Speed 1, the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, civil works in London's 2012 Olympic Park and parts of Crossrail. It took its present name in 2008 and is a principal construction partner of Network Rail. The BAM website's only stated purpose is the tagline Making possible, and the group strategy for 2024 to 2026 is called Building a sustainable tomorrow. The group's values are reliable, inclusive, sustainable, collaborative and ownership.
Examples of current UK work on BAM's website include phase one of Our Cultural Heart in Huddersfield, replacing four railway bridges on the London Overground Suffragette line, new schools in the Midlands for about 4,000 pupils, a new entrance at Bristol Temple Meads, and the British Antarctic Survey Rothera modernisation, which won three awards at the 2026 British Construction and Infrastructure Awards. Through a joint venture called KeirBAM it built a 620 metre tunnel at Hinkley Point C. BAM Nuttall is also part of a joint venture on HS2. The UK head office of BAM Nuttall is reported as Farnborough in Hampshire, and the group has offices in major UK cities; BAM FM alone employs around 1,000 people across the UK and Ireland. The company's website does not publish a UK-only headcount, and the group as a whole has about 13,200 staff.
On culture, BAM's UK site has an Our people section covering leadership, diversity and inclusion, wellbeing, and health and safety, but we did not read it in full, so we cannot describe it. Its leadership in the UK and Ireland is led by chief operating officer John Wilkinson. The company's values are its own claims.
BAM employs site managers, engineers, planners, quantity surveyors, who price and measure construction work, designers, ground engineers, health and safety advisers, facilities engineers, plant operators and the support staff of a large business. If you like seeing things being built, working outdoors, or planning big projects, this is the kind of firm that offers a wide range of roles.
