One of the UK's biggest independent care providers, with over 200 care homes and hospitals, offering apprenticeships and nursing careers.
Barchester Healthcare provides care for older people and adults, including dementia care, assisted living, nursing care and registered hospitals. It has also been opening new homes and small retirement communities.
Its company profile says it started by providing high-quality nursing care and hospitality to older people. It describes its values as quality of care, hospitality, personalised care, investment in staff training and good career pathways. Its chief executive, Dr Pete Calveley, aims to provide the "highest quality of life" for residents and support for families.
It was founded in 1992 by Mike Parsons. The company profile says it has over 200 care homes, 17,000 colleagues and supports more than 11,000 people. It named no regions on that page, but a 2014 release spoke of homes "throughout the UK", and apprenticeship adverts appear in places such as Eastbourne and Wimbledon.
Roles range from care and nursing to housekeeping, catering, administration and customer services. These are the company's own claims about development, so ask a home manager what support you would get.
Barchester runs an apprenticeships and development section on its careers site, and adult care apprentice adverts have appeared on the government's apprenticeship service, including Eastbourne (closed 17 April 2026). In 2014 it recruited with Jobcentre Plus and the National Apprenticeship Service, including work experience and traineeships (dated). We could not read the careers page, so entry requirements, pay and levels are not confirmed.
