About Barratt Redrow

Barratt Redrow is one of the biggest housebuilders in the UK. It buys land, designs neighbourhoods, builds houses and flats, and sells them to families, first-time buyers and people moving up or downsizing. It trades through four brands. Barratt Homes is aimed at first-time buyers and young families, David Wilson Homes at people moving up the ladder, Redrow at premium buyers and those downsizing, and Barratt London builds in the capital. The company says it plans to build more than 22,000 homes a year over the medium term.

The company puts its purpose like this: "We put our customer first, building high quality homes and creating great places where people love to live." It also says it wants to be the leading national sustainable homebuilder. Its pages stress build quality, customer service and what it calls placemaking, which means thinking about parks, paths, schools and shops as well as the houses themselves. It points to awards for its site managers, including the NHBC Pride in the Job awards, and to a commitment to inclusive play spaces developed with the charity Whizz-Kidz.

The two companies have deep roots in different parts of the UK. Barratt began in the North East: Lawrie Barratt, a young accountant, built his own four-bedroom home in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1953 and formed his first company in 1958. It became Britain's biggest housebuilder in 1979 and took over Wilson Bowden, owner of David Wilson Homes, in 2007. Redrow was started in 1974 by Steve Morgan, then 21, with a £5,000 loan from his father, as a small civil engineering firm in North Wales, and built its first big housing scheme in Denbigh. Redrow joined the Barratt group in 2024. Schemes named on the company's history page include London Docklands, Toxteth in Liverpool, Hanham Hall in Bristol and Dickens Heath near Solihull. We could not confirm the current head office from the pages we read.

The pages we read do not describe the working culture or give a staff headcount, so we have not guessed at either. What the company does say is that the customer comes first and that site teams are recognised for their pride in the job. Because a housebuilder has to cover everything from finding land to handing over keys, it employs a wide mix of people: site managers, surveyors, planners, engineers, designers, sales advisers, customer care teams, buyers and finance and legal staff.

If you enjoy working outdoors, solving practical puzzles, or talking to people about big decisions in their lives, there is a role in a business like this to match. Maths, geography, design and technology and business studies are all useful starting points. The company's own website lists current vacancies and the brands and regions where it builds, which is the best place to see what is near you.
