A Newcastle-based UK housebuilder founded in 1946, building houses and flats across England, Scotland and Wales under the Bellway and Ashberry Homes names.
Bellway builds houses and apartments for sale across Great Britain, from two-bedroom flats in London to five-bedroom family homes in Northumberland. It trades as Bellway and Ashberry Homes, and has a separate land business, Bellway Strategic Land, which finds and prepares sites for future building. Its Bright Network profile says it sells more than 10,000 homes a year, and Wikipedia reports that it was on track to build 10,000 in a single year for the first time in 2018.
Bellway's stated core purpose is "Building homes that last". Its website explains this as using the right materials, people and checks, with carefully designed processes so that homes feel like home, and building communities that can grow. Its sustainability pillars are creating communities, building sustainable homes and valuing people. It says it has held the Home Builders Federation five-star builder rating for ten years in a row, which is a company claim.
The company began in 1946 in Newcastle upon Tyne as John T. Bell & Sons, founded by John Thomas Bell and his sons John and Russell. Kenneth Bell, the youngest brother, joined in 1951 and ran the housebuilding business after it was separated from the family's property company in 1979. Bellway helped to build Cramlington New Town in Northumberland in the early 1960s and expanded into the south east of England in 1973. Its head office is still in Newcastle upon Tyne. It operates through local divisional offices: Wikipedia counts 20 divisions across England, Scotland and Wales, and an older Bright Network profile says 22, so the number has changed over time.
The company says it cares about its workforce and wants to be the employer of choice. Its Bright Network profile says it prefers to promote from within, and that several senior leaders, including the author of that page, rose through the company. Wikipedia gave about 3,100 employees in 2020, an older figure. These are company claims; we found no independent staff survey.
Because each division works like a smaller housebuilder, Bellway employs people in many roles: site managers and assistant site managers, surveyors, engineers, land and planning specialists, designers, sales advisers, customer care staff, and finance and procurement teams. Maths, geography, design technology and business studies all connect to this work. Bellway's careers pages sit on a separate site, so go to the company website to find current vacancies.
