Berkeley Group

A Cobham-based UK developer that builds homes and large regeneration neighbourhoods, mainly in London and the South East.

About Berkeley Group

Berkeley Group builds new homes and whole new neighbourhoods, mostly in London and the South East of England. Its homes are sold under the Berkeley name, it has a rental arm called Berkeley Living, a commercial property arm called Berkeley Commercial and Berkeley Partnership, which delivers affordable housing with public sector partners. Its approach is summed up on its site as "Designed for Life". Well-known schemes listed by Wikipedia include One Blackfriars, Kidbrooke Village and Royal Arsenal Riverside in south London, Woodberry Down in Hackney and a 750-home scheme at Warfield, Bracknell.

The group says it aims at "creating thriving communities across London and the South East". Its pages highlight design, placemaking, sustainability and a people-first approach to customer experience, and point to a document called Our Vision 2030 with ten long-term priorities, though we could not read the ten. By March 2026 its former brand names St Edward, St George, St James, St Joseph and St William had all been folded into the single Berkeley brand, so you may see them on older material.

Tony Pidgley and Jim Farrer started Berkeley Homes in Weybridge, Surrey, in 1976 after leaving the housing division of Crest Homes. At first they built executive homes on single plots and small sites. In the 1990s the company moved towards big urban regeneration projects in London and other cities. Its registered office for Berkeley Partnership is Berkeley House, 19 Portsmouth Road, Cobham, Surrey, and Wikipedia lists Cobham as the group head office. Its developments reach across London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Surrey, the West Midlands and West Sussex. Its first Berkeley Living rental community, Foundry Yard at Alexandra Gate, launched in early 2026.

Wikipedia gives 2,532 employees in 2025, a third-party figure. We found no staff survey or culture page. The company was recognised in 2014 as the most sustainable larger UK homebuilder, according to that entry, and it published a plan in 2005 for a net-zero carbon development.

Regeneration work calls on an unusually wide range of skills. Teams include town planners working with local councils, architects and engineers, construction and site managers, quantity surveyors, sales and lettings staff, customer care teams, and people who look after landscaping and public spaces. Subjects such as geography, maths, art and design, science and business studies can all lead there. See the company's website for current vacancies.
