Bidwells

A private UK property and agribusiness consultancy, founded in Ely in 1839, with 13 UK offices in England and Scotland.

About Bidwells

Bidwells is a multi-disciplined firm of property and agribusiness consultants. Wikipedia lists its services as investment and acquisitions, sales and lettings, consultancy, property and estate management, valuation, fund management, building consultancy, planning, environmental impact assessment, and agribusiness consultancy. It works across residential, commercial and rural property. Agribusiness means the business side of farming and land, such as helping farms and landowners plan how they use land.

The firm was founded in 1839 by Charles Muriel Bidwell, who began in Ely. It opened its Cambridge office in 1880, moved into commercial work in 1920 and became a limited liability partnership in 2009. Charles Bidwell Junior later joined and became President of RICS in 1905, and Sir Francis Pemberton, who joined in 1939, had a large influence on the early years. Its Cambridge office is called Bidwell House, and the firm has traditionally been strong in the East of England.

We did not find a mission or values statement in the sources we read, so we have not invented one. Property Week ranks Bidwells in its Top 20 Property Consultants, according to Wikipedia, and the same page calls it the largest independent property consultancy outside London. That page is a third-party summary and not the firm's own claim.

In the UK, Wikipedia says Bidwells has 13 offices: nine in England and four in Scotland. Search results confirm Bidwell House in Cambridge, and a Bidwells residential website lists homes sales. Nick Pettit became Senior Partner in 2022, and Finlay Clark became Deputy Managing Partner at the same time. Wikipedia gave more than 500 employees as at 2019, so numbers may have changed since.

The mix of farming, land and city property means Bidwells employs surveyors, agents, planners, land and estate managers, farm business advisers, environmental specialists, building consultants and fund managers, along with administrative, finance and marketing staff. Geography, the sciences, maths, economics and business studies are helpful starting points. Bidwells' own website lists current roles. The firm's long history in the countryside of eastern England means many staff work on farms, estates and land as well as in city offices. Separately, a search found an apprenticeship-service listing for a project management apprentice at the firm, though we did not read it in detail.
