Blokur

A London music rights and data company that helps match recordings to songs so that songwriters and publishers get paid accurately.

About Blokur

Blokur is a music rights and data company. It builds software that links recordings with the songs (compositions) behind them and with the people who own the rights, so streaming services and rights owners can report and pay accurately. Behind that is a hard data problem: who wrote what, who owns what share, and where in the world.

Wikipedia describes the founder as Phil Barry, a former recording artist who wanted to fix artists not being paid effectively. In the 2024 announcement of the company's sale, Barry is quoted as chief executive saying that joining Music Reports would allow Blokur "to scale our technology platform". The announcement describes the company as a music licensing and data platform that aims to get rights holders paid accurately. We did not find a longer mission page.

Blokur is based in London. We flag that it is ACQUIRED: by Music Reports (2024). A RouteNote article says its technology was then built into Music Reports' Trakdex system, and that on 19 October 2026 Musixmatch announced a deal to acquire Music Reports, Songdex and Blokur. Wikipedia still lists it as active at blokur.com, but its exact UK status and team after these deals are unconfirmed. The same article describes the matching problem as messy rights data such as inconsistent songwriter name spellings, incomplete ownership details and duplicate works. In 2022 it began building a copyright hub for IMPEL Collective Management Limited, and in December 2023 The MLC named it among five companies in its Supplemental Matching Network. It also has partnerships with 7digital and Tuned Global. Wikipedia lists funders including Innovate UK.

The work needs people with different skills: data engineers, rights and licensing experts, product people, and customer-facing staff who explain the data to labels, publishers and platforms. Blokur also published an annual Songwriters' Review ranking top global songwriters by their share in the most-streamed songs, including a 2021 edition with The Ivors Academy, which shows how data can tell stories about music.

This is a good company to know if you like both music and maths or computing. We did not read its own website, and we have no team or culture details beyond what is stated above, so look at blokur.com to see how it describes its people.
