BMW Group UK Manufacturing (MINI)

BMW Group's UK manufacturing arm, building MINIs at Plant Oxford with body panels from Swindon and engines from Hams Hall.

About BMW Group UK Manufacturing (MINI)

BMW Group UK Manufacturing runs the plants that make the modern MINI in Britain. MINI Plant Oxford builds the cars, Plant Swindon makes body panels and Plant Hams Hall in North Warwickshire builds engines for the Oxford-built cars. Together they have made more than 4.6 million MINIs since the first new-generation car left the Oxford line on 26 April 2001.

The Oxford site has been part of its community for 113 years, according to a 2026 BMW Group press release, and Swindon for 70 years. We did not find a written mission statement for the UK plants. Instead the company speaks about pride in the product. The chief executive of BMW (UK) Manufacturing, Markus Grüneisl, said that the plants "have been at the heart of MINI's global success", and the plants run public tours, which had over 17,500 visitors in 2025.

The UK footprint is clear and spread across the south of England and the Midlands: Oxford, Swindon and Hams Hall. Oxford and Swindon together employ over 3,000 people, and the cars are exported to more than 100 markets. A MINI comes off the line every 78 seconds, which gives an idea of the pace. The press release describes 14 model variations over four generations, including electric models, and 95 body colours, so the range of choices is huge. The fastest factory-built MINI is the John Cooper Works GP from 2020, which reaches 164 mph, and the three most popular UK colours since 2001 (Pepper White, Chili Red and Midnight Black) make up 35% of UK registrations. Hams Hall has built engines for Oxford-built MINIs since 2006.

The same release describes the workforce in some detail. Staff come from 64 nationalities, and ages run from 16 to 68, with an average of 44. A quarter of people, 26%, have worked there since 2001 or earlier, and 115 people marked 25 years of service in 2026. Several families have worked there across three or four generations. That suggests a place with a strong sense of belonging, though these are the company's own figures.

The release also says the plants employ 111 apprentices. Behind each car are teams in body, paint and assembly, logistics, quality, engineering and engine production. BMW Group's UK careers pages and press site give more on the people who work across the plants. The plants sit within BMW Group, which reports over 30 production sites worldwide and 154,540 employees at the end of 2025. Since 2001 the UK plants have made, among other parts, more than 18 million doors and almost 20 million seats, which gives a sense of the scale of the work.
