A Macclesfield-headquartered company that provides heat treatment and specialist thermal processing services to harden and strengthen metal parts for aerospace, energy, automotive and general engineering.
Bodycote is a specialist provider of heat treatment, the process of heating and cooling metal parts under tightly controlled conditions to make them harder, tougher or longer-lasting. It also offers metal joining, hot isostatic pressing, in which parts are put under high heat and pressure to remove tiny internal flaws, and surface coatings. Its customers send parts, such as aircraft components or gears, and get them back treated to a precise specification. Wikipedia says it serves two groups of markets: aerospace, defence and energy, and automotive and general industrial, which includes construction, machine building, medical and transport.
The company was founded in 1923 in Hinckley, Leicestershire, by Arthur Bodycote as a textile business, G.R. Bodycote Ltd. In the 1970s it moved into specialist materials, and from 1979 and 1980 it began buying heat treatment and coatings businesses. It later acquired a hot isostatic pressing business, in 1991, and a materials testing business in Edinburgh, which was sold in 2008 and became the basis of Exova. It changed its name from Bodycote International plc to Bodycote plc in 2008. In 2018 it opened a new facility at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham, Yorkshire, to support aerospace and power generation customers in the UK and Europe.
We did not find a mission or values statement on the pages we could read, so we have not made one up. What the sources show is a business built on technical know-how: for example, the Rotherham plant was set up with the aim of obtaining major manufacturer approvals and Nadcap accreditation, the quality standard used by the aerospace industry. The company's own description is that it aims to focus on the markets where its technical capabilities matter most.
Bodycote's head office is in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and the company is listed on the London Stock Exchange. It has a UK company record for Bodycote Heat Treatments Limited and a UK facility network that includes the Rotherham plant, although we could not confirm a complete UK site list. Across the world the group has about 130 facilities in 22 countries and around 4,000 employees, according to a recent announcement, down from an older figure of more than 180 facilities in 23 countries.
Because customers ship parts to Bodycote's plants, the people there include furnace and process operators, metallurgists, laboratory and quality technicians, maintenance and automation engineers, and logistics, customer service, finance and sales teams. If you are good at chemistry, physics, maths or design and technology, metallurgy is a way to see those subjects at work on real components. The company's own website lists current vacancies and where they are based.
