Boots is one of the best-known pharmacies on the UK high street. Its pharmacies dispense prescriptions and sell medicines, and it also runs Boots Opticians and offers hearing care and online mental health treatment, alongside health and beauty products.
The company's early careers page says "care is at the heart of everything we do". Its trainee pharmacist page talks about continuing to be "the trusted and much-loved community pharmacy we've been for more than 175 years" and about rewarding "the people who care for our communities". We did not find a longer formal mission statement.
Boots began in Nottingham in 1849 and its head office is in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. Public sources give about 2,000 locations across the UK and Ireland (as at December 2024), so stores are found in towns and cities across the country. The exact UK-only store count was not clear.
Boots describes an "open and inclusive working environment" with career pathways and access to learning, and it points to free wellbeing support for colleagues. These are the company's own claims, so ask about them when you visit a store or apply.
Apprenticeships are open to anyone over 16, with entry roles such as Customer Advisor, Beauty Specialist, Opticians Retail Assistant and Trainee Pharmacy Dispenser. Graduate roles and internships are listed as available year-round depending on business need. Pharmacy students can apply for the one-year Foundation Training Year through Oriel (England and Wales) or NICPLD (Northern Ireland), and Boots offers work experience through local stores and a virtual programme for ages 14 to 19.
