A London specialty insurer and reinsurer that writes Lloyd's Syndicate 2987 business from The Leadenhall Building and is part of the Fairfax group.
Brit describes itself as a leading global specialty insurer and reinsurer focused on underwriting complex risks. It writes more than 50 products, including cyber, directors and officers, political risk, energy, marine, contingency, property, healthcare liability, professional liability and private client insurance. Its Lloyd's Syndicate 2987 is one of the largest in the market. It also has Brit Re, a reinsurer in Bermuda, and Camargue, which writes niche products.
Brit says its aim is to create best-in-class insurance solutions for clients by combining technical expertise with industry knowledge. Its stated behaviours are listening, sharing and collaborating, and it says it hires strong people and develops their skills. Its parent, Fairfax, describes itself as a values-led organisation guided by being fair and friendly. We did not find a formal list of Brit's own values on the pages we read.
ACQUIRED: by Fairfax Financial Holdings (2015), and it still operates under the Brit name. The company was founded in 1995 as Benfield and Rea Investment Trust, bought Stewart Syndicates in 1996 and Wren in 1999, and became Brit Insurance. It was taken private in 2011, floated again in 2014 and bought by Fairfax in 2015. Its company history also records the launch of Ki in 2020, an algorithm-driven Lloyd's syndicate created with Google Cloud, which became a standalone business in the Fairfax group in 2024.
Brit's UK home is London. Its history page says it moved to a new headquarters in The Leadenhall Building in 2016 and opened a Lloyd's Box there. Matthew Wilson was group chief executive from 2016, and Martin Thompson took over in 2022. It also has offices in Bermuda and India, where Brit India is its service hub, and teams in the United States. We could not confirm other UK offices or a UK headcount.
The Brit careers section lists business areas of actuarial, claims, finance, internal audit, operations and risk, in addition to underwriting. Its history notes that it appointed a Chief Data Officer and Chief Technology Officer in 2022, and that it has used machine learning to speed up some claims, so data and technology skills are part of the picture. It has also partnered with the charity GT Scholars on insurance career outreach (2022), and has sponsored Team BRIT, which are its own announcements.
