About British Land

British Land is one of the UK's largest listed property companies. It describes itself as one of Europe's largest listed real estate companies and as the UK's leading owner and operator of campuses. A campus, in its words, is a large London estate where offices, shops, restaurants, public spaces and homes are planned together. Its campuses are Broadgate in the City of London, Paddington Central and Regent's Place, and it is also developing Canada Water as a mixed-use district with workspace, retail, leisure, education and affordable housing. Alongside these it owns retail space and what it calls urban logistics.

The company's history is unusually long. Wikipedia says it was founded in 1856 as an offshoot of the National Freehold Land Society, which Richard Cobden and John Bright formed in 1849 to help people buy small plots of land and so meet the property requirement for voting. It later became a regular commercial business and has been a real estate investment trust (REIT) since 2007. Its stated aim is to create and manage outstanding places that benefit all its stakeholders over the long term, an approach it calls Places People Prefer: sustainable, modern places that respond to what customers need, built around an understanding of the people who use them and the communities around them.

Almost everything British Land does in the UK is centred on London, with the campuses covering the City (Broadgate, next to Liverpool Street station), the West End (Paddington Central) and the Knowledge Quarter near King's Cross (Regent's Place), where it says it is repositioning space for science and technology firms. Wikipedia also lists 122 Leadenhall Street, known as The Cheese Grater, and says the company still manages Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield after selling its remaining stake in 2024. Wikipedia names Joanne McNamara as chief executive from June 2026.

We did not find a dedicated culture or people page, so we cannot describe working life from the company's own words beyond its stated approach. What the pages we read do show is the range of customers the company works with: financial services, law, media, telecoms, technology and science firms on its campuses, and shops, restaurants and gyms on the ground floors. Its workspace range includes Core (a building tenants fit out themselves), Work Ready (fitted or managed space) and Storey (flexible, shared space).

A property company of this kind employs asset managers who look after buildings and tenants, development managers who plan and deliver new buildings, leasing and retail teams, finance and legal staff, sustainability specialists and community teams. School subjects that point this way include geography, maths, economics, business, design and technology, and the sciences for sustainability roles. The company's website is the place to check for current vacancies and for the shape of its team.
