A Scunthorpe-based steelmaker that makes rail, heavy sections and wire rod, and the only company in the UK still making steel from raw materials.
British Steel makes long steel products, which means steel rolled into lengths rather than flat sheets. At its Scunthorpe steelworks in Lincolnshire it makes steel from raw materials, then rolls it into rail, rod and sections. Its Teesside Beam Mill makes heavy sections, which are the big beams used in construction, and its Skinningrove works makes special sections and crane rail. The UK government has said its steel has been used in sports stadiums, bridges, ocean liners and the Jodrell Bank space observatory. It also has an engineering workshop in Workington and, according to Wikipedia, a rail mill in Hayange in France.
The company in its present form was created in 2016, when Greybull Capital bought the long products business of Tata Steel Europe. The business went through an insolvency process in May 2019, and the Chinese steelmaker Jingye Group completed its purchase on 9 March 2020. When that sale was announced the government said it safeguarded about 3,200 jobs, and the owner said it planned new product lines for UK and global markets. We could not find a mission statement or a list of company values on the pages we could read, so we have not invented one.
British Steel's story has become a national one. In April 2025 the government passed emergency legislation to take operational control of the Scunthorpe site after talks about moving it from blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces, a different and lower-carbon way of making steel, broke down. The National Audit Office later reported on that intervention. Wikipedia also reports that the company is due to move into public ownership from 16 July 2026, so please check the latest news before relying on this. The company has used interim leaders, including Allan Bell as interim chief executive.
On people, Wikipedia gives 4,052 permanent staff in January 2026, down from around 5,000 when the 2016 takeover happened, with most based around Scunthorpe, Teesside and Skinningrove. These are steelworking communities where families have often worked in the industry for generations. Pages we could read describe the company's subsidiaries TSP Engineering and FN Steel, which give the group engineering and steel products capabilities beyond rolling mills. We have no company statements about culture, so we have not described it.
A steelworks needs far more than furnace operators. Roles include process and metallurgy engineers, maintenance engineers and electricians, rolling-mill operators, rail and quality testers, health and safety specialists, logistics and rail dispatch teams, and the finance, HR, IT and commercial staff who support them. If you enjoy physics, chemistry, engineering, design and technology or maths, this is a place where those subjects shape products that carry trains and hold up buildings.
