Butternut Box

A London and Doncaster company that makes freshly cooked, human-grade meals for dogs, delivered frozen by subscription.

About Butternut Box

Butternut Box makes complete and balanced fresh meals for dogs from human-grade ingredients, gently cooked at no more than 90 degrees, portioned and delivered frozen on a subscription. Its recipes are developed by animal scientists and nutrition experts with veterinary oversight.

It was founded in 2016 by two friends, Kevin Glynn and David Nolan, who were working at Goldman Sachs. They started after cooking fresh meals for a sick rescue dog named Rudie, whose health improved. They began in a kitchen with a slow cooker and a spreadsheet, left banking, hired a vet nutritionist and delivered meals across London themselves.

Its tagline is fresh food, made for dogs, and the founders' core belief is that dogs deserve better food. The company has been a Certified B Corporation since 2022, saying it wants to use business as a force for good for dogs, people and the planet. It runs a multi-year research partnership with the University of Surrey's School of Veterinary Medicine, and says its nutrition and veterinary team stand behind each recipe. The 2023 article says the founders hired a vet nutritionist early on and describe a loyal customer base who treat their dogs like family.

The company lists London and Doncaster as its locations. Its food is made in its own kitchen in Doncaster, a large site holding top-grade BRCGS food safety certification, and it also serves Ireland and parts of Europe. A product directory reports about 1,000 employees and over 250,000 pets eating its food daily across the UK and Ireland. A 2023 article describes a focus on customer service and says growth came mainly from word of mouth.

Its 2023 profile says it built its own kitchen, logistics and technology rather than rely on outside partners, runs a customer service team it describes as obsessive, and had shipped over 30 million meals. A pet-food business that makes, cools and delivers its own product employs food scientists and technologists, kitchen and factory teams, cold-chain logistics, vets and nutritionists, customer care, marketing and data teams. The company chose to own its kitchen, logistics and technology, so there is a wide range of roles under one roof. The 2023 article adds that the company grew mainly through word of mouth and customer retention rather than heavy paid advertising, and that it describes a customer score above 80.
