About Byline Times

Byline Times is a British independent news outlet that publishes investigations, analysis and opinion on politics and society. It has a free website, a monthly print newspaper for subscribers, a podcast, a books imprint and an annual festival. Its sections are Fact, Argument, Reportage and Culture, and its investigation series include The Cost of Living Crisis, Democracy in Danger and The Climate Emergency. It focuses on stories that mainstream media may overlook.

Its About page says its aim is to concentrate on 'what the papers don't say'. It describes itself as non-partisan but not neutral, opposing corruption, injustice and the erosion of truth, and aiming to represent under-covered communities and regions. Its funding line is 'No oligarchs, no government bungs, no adverts'. It is regulated by the press regulator Impress.

Byline Times launched in 2019, growing out of the crowdfunded Byline platform, which Peter Jukes and Stephen Colegrave took over in 2016. Wikipedia lists it as based in London, and the company was registered in Birmingham in 2018. Its print edition began in summer 2019. Its editor-in-chief is Hardeep Matharu. By July 2023 it had about 29,000 paying subscribers, around half of them for print, according to Wikipedia. Its three directors, Jukes, Colegrave and Matharu, say they hold full editorial and financial control, and 2,298 shareholders hold shares in the company.

The About page lists the team: reporters including Adam Bienkov, Josiah Mortimer and Nafeez Ahmed, editorial support, production and a podcast editor, plus well-known columnists such as Peter Oborne and Caroline Lucas. Wikipedia reported 8 permanent staff in 2024, working with monthly retainer writers and about 500 freelancers. It stresses transparency: the founders hold public events where readers can question them.

Roles at a news outlet like this include reporters, investigators, sub-editors, production editors, podcast and audio producers, communications and operations staff, events and festival teams, and print and subscription staff. Its careers page was not read, so check bylinetimes.com for open roles. Its sister projects, Byline Investigates and Byline Books, show the range of work, from long investigations to publishing books and running a summer festival.
