The UK arm of Swiss laser cutting and bending machine maker Bystronic, with an Experience Centre and headquarters in Coventry.
Bystronic UK sells and supports machines that cut and bend metal. The Swiss group's range includes fibre laser cutting systems, tube laser cutting, press brakes for bending, automation, plasma and waterjet cutting, and software. The UK Experience Centre page shows current laser, bending and automation systems, including tube processing for diameters from 12 to 610 mm, and says the aim is to "minimise waste to increase profit". Customers are metalworking firms, from small workshops to large factories.
The group was founded in 1964 as Bystronic Maschinen AG in Butzberg, Switzerland, and its name combines the surnames of its three founders, Byland, Schneider and Trosch. It began in glass processing and delivered its first laser cutting system in 1984. The group history page lists later steps such as the 1997 move into bending and the 2021 listing on the Swiss stock exchange, but gives no mission or values statement. The UK business also took over FJ Edwards, a press brake and guillotine maker, according to a 2010 article.
In the UK, a 2010 article says Bystronic combined its Leeds and Chard sites at a new Coventry facility, with a showroom, spares stores, offices and training facilities. The business opened there on 4 January 2010. The current Experience Centre page gives the same address, 6 Wayside Business Park, Wilsons Lane, Coventry, near junction 3 of the M6. Companies House lists Bystronic UK Limited. A 2012 article calls the Coventry building its headquarters and describes a demonstration area.
On people, the sources give less than for other companies. A 2012 article quotes managing director David Larcombe about the cost and logistics of moving large machines, and says the company's first quarter of 2012 was its strongest in over four years. These are over a decade old and we have not found current leadership or headcount. The Experience Centre page says a specialist can help visitors choose a suitable machine, which points to an advice-led sales culture.
Jobs in a business like this include sales and applications engineers, laser and bending technicians, service engineers, software and automation specialists, trainers, spare parts staff and administrators. Useful subjects include maths, physics, computing and design and technology. If you like seeing technology at work, a laser machine slicing steel to a tiny tolerance is a striking sight, and Bystronic's Coventry centre exists to show it to customers.
