A London company that owns, manages and develops the Canary Wharf estate, a business district and neighbourhood on the former London Docklands.
Canary Wharf Group owns, manages and develops the Canary Wharf estate in east London, a large business district with offices, shops, restaurants and homes. A Gradcracker profile says it is regenerating 128 acres of formerly derelict Docklands and describes this as Europe's largest urban regeneration project. The estate has over 300 shops within a 15-minute walk, and Level39, a technology hub with over 200 start-ups across three floors of One Canada Square. Its newest district, Wood Wharf, is planned to have up to 3,600 homes, 2 million square feet of offices and more than nine acres of public space.
Wikipedia says the company was formed in 1993 as Canary Wharf Limited to take over the assets of the property company Olympia and York after it ran into difficulties. It was acquired by an international group in 1995, listed on the stock market in 1999, and has since been owned privately. Brookfield Properties and the Qatar Investment Authority have owned it since 2015. Wikipedia names Shobi Khan as chief executive and Nigel Wilson as chairman. Gradcracker gives the mission as turning urban spaces into exceptional places, and lists values including respect, inclusivity, high quality, ownership, collaboration and first-class customer service.
The company is based in London and nearly all of its work is on the Canary Wharf estate in the east of the city, plus other London sites. Wikipedia says it developed 20 Fenchurch Street in the City and is redeveloping the Shell Centre site on the South Bank, and that it built Canary Wharf railway station for Crossrail (now the Elizabeth line). It owns a construction business, Canary Wharf Contractors, which has built most of the buildings on the estate, and a build-to-rent business, Vertus. About 900 homes were built at Southbank Place through a joint venture.
Gradcracker's profile describes a 24/7 neighbourhood with an arts and events programme, waterside living and green spaces, and says the company wants to be an employer of choice. It says it favours leaders who plan for the long term and find better ways of working. These are the company's own statements as repeated by a careers site. We did not find an employee count or any independent view of the culture, so those are gaps.
An organisation that runs a whole district employs unusually varied people: estate and property managers, development and project teams, engineers and building services specialists, planners, retail and leasing teams, community and events staff, security and operations, technology and finance. Its own contracting arm and technology hub add construction and start-up connections. Maths, science, geography, design and business all lead in. Check the company website for current vacancies.
