A London-based renters' platform, founded in 2015, whose RentPassport helps renters build a credit record and apply for homes more easily.
Canopy is a company set up to make renting easier for tenants. Its main product is the RentPassport, a free digital profile that a renter can use every time they move, and which agents and landlords can use to pre-screen applicants. Tenants can also build their credit rating by having on-time rent payments reported to a credit reference agency, which can help later when applying for a mortgage or credit. At launch, it also offered DepositFree cover, an insurance product that lets renters avoid paying a large deposit. The company is a trading name of InsureStreet Limited and is an appointed representative of a firm regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority for insurance distribution.
Canopy was founded in 2015. A 2019 TechRound profile names Tahir Farooqui as its founder and explains his motivation: he had rented in several countries where deposits were required, and his brother struggled to find a rental after graduating. The article also notes that UK rents had risen far faster than wages. Mr Farooqui later stepped down as chief executive, according to a Finextra headline, so leadership has changed. The company says it is "on a mission to revolutionise renting and help people grow, both financially and towards a better life".
Canopy is based in London. Its employer profile says that it has 44 employees, though that figure is undated and the profile gives conflicting information about whether the team works in an office. The product is aimed at renters across the UK, and its partners include the credit reference agency Experian and insurer Hiscox, as named in the TechRound article from 2019. Those partnerships may have changed.
We found little about the culture inside Canopy. The employer profile describes a fast-growing team that is looking for new members but gives no further detail. Its mission statement suggests a company that cares about fairness for tenants, who are often in a weaker position than landlords. Beyond that we have no evidence, and we have not invented any.
A fintech-style renting company needs software engineers, data and credit specialists, product and design staff, customer support staff, partnership and sales teams who work with agents and landlords, and compliance and insurance specialists. Since the company combines property with financial services, people with an interest in money, technology and housing may find it a good fit. Its own website is the place to check how it operates today.
