An independent UK property consultancy, founded in Cambridge in 1855, with over 1,000 people in 32 offices across commercial, residential, rural and planning work.
Carter Jonas describes itself as a UK property consultancy and multi-disciplinary partnership. It works in commercial property, homes, rural land and estates, planning, development and infrastructure. Its services include property sales and lettings, consultancy across those sectors, and portfolio and asset management. Its clients range from residential landlords to owners of farmland, healthcare estates, castles, wind farms and wineries, and it lists accreditations from RICS, the planning body RTPI, The Property Ombudsman and ARLA.
The firm was founded in Cambridge in 1855 by John Carter Jonas, who began as an auctioneer. Its estate management work started when he was appointed to run a family estate in Buckinghamshire. It opened its first London office in 1909, expanded to Oxford through a merger in 1924, and became a limited liability partnership in 2003. A 2009 merger with Dreweatt Neate took it from 20 to 31 offices across England and Wales, and in 2023 it became the exclusive UK affiliate of Christie's International Real Estate. It celebrated 100 years in Oxford in 2024.
Carter Jonas says its vision is to be the UK property sector's partner of choice. Its three stated values are approachable, effective and ambitious. Approachable means treating every client with integrity, respect and warmth; effective means delivering on commitments and being accountable; and ambitious means aiming high for clients and the company. A five-year plan called Vision 2030 sets out its next goals, and it says it has worked with the natural environment since 1855 and puts sustainability at the centre of its approach.
In the UK, it says it has over 1,000 property professionals in 32 offices. Office pages we saw for the firm include Cambridge, Peterborough and London's Chapel Place. It says some large property owners have worked with it since 1855, which it presents as proof of long relationships. These are company claims, and we have not checked them independently.
On people, Carter Jonas calls its partnership model central to how it works and says its People Strategy 2025 commits it to being open and inclusive and to developing staff through learning and career paths. A firm like this employs surveyors, agents, planners, land and farm managers, valuers, lettings and property managers, and support teams in marketing, finance, legal and technology. Geography, economics, maths, business and rural studies can all help. Its website lists current roles.
