Cellnex UK

A UK mobile-tower and indoor-coverage company, part of the Spanish Cellnex group, that hosts the equipment mobile networks use to reach phones across the country.

About Cellnex UK

Cellnex UK owns and runs mobile masts and other sites where mobile operators place their equipment, so that several networks can share the same structure instead of each building its own. Its managing director, Steve Cray, has described it as the UK's largest independent shared infrastructure provider, with about 14,000 towers. It has also grown into small cells (compact mobile transmitters that add capacity in busy places), indoor systems and distributed antenna systems, which spread a mobile signal around the inside of a large building.

The business has roots in earlier British telecoms companies. Arqiva sold its telecoms division, which held masts and sites, to Cellnex in 2019, and Cellnex later added UK sites previously owned by Hutchison and a set of BT high towers. In 2022 the Competition and Markets Authority ordered about 1,100 towers to be sold. Cellnex does not give a formal mission statement on the UK pages we read; its indoor page uses taglines such as "No indoor coverage? No problem" and describes itself as "the indoor coverage expert". We have not invented a mission beyond that.

The pages we could read do not name a UK head office. They do describe the work on the ground. Cellnex has worked with Virgin Media O2 to improve coverage along the Brighton Main Line, using masts beside the track and antenna systems in tunnels and other hard-to-reach places. Its indoor page lists about 1,000 small cells and nodes in the UK, with examples including central London, the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, the Old War Office Hotel and Lidl supermarkets, and says it has relationships with all the UK mobile network operators.

On people, the pages we read name only a few: Steve Cray as managing director and Liam Graham as Head of Sales for the indoor service. A City Football Group technology chief praised the Etihad Stadium project, saying it would give visitors reliable 4G and the prospect of faster 5G. We found no UK page about company culture or values, so we make no claims about those.

A tower company employs more kinds of people than you might expect. There are engineers who design and install antenna systems, surveyors and site-acquisition specialists who find and agree places for masts, project managers who keep builds on schedule, and account managers who work with operators. Finance, legal, health-and-safety and data staff keep a large property-like portfolio running. Interest in electronics, construction, or working outdoors on real-world infrastructure all suit this kind of company.
