A Loughborough-based organisation, founded in 2005, that helps businesses and councils adopt low-carbon and connected vehicle technology.
Cenex is a UK organisation based in Loughborough that helps fleets, councils and businesses move to low-carbon vehicles and the energy systems that support them. It began as a way to bridge what it called the 'valley of death' between promising low-carbon vehicle technology and the companies that could actually use it. Its work includes research and development, consultancy such as logging how fleets use vehicles and modelling where electric vehicles save money, and advising councils on fleet changes and incentives. It was also an assessor for a government energy-savings scheme for transport.
Cenex was founded in 2005 with public funding and ran vehicle trials to learn which vehicles suited which jobs. A profile written for its tenth anniversary said it no longer received direct government funding and now won its work through bids and tenders. It also ran the annual Low Carbon Vehicle event at Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedford, and a separate event on connected and autonomous vehicles, and it worked on projects including niche vehicle research, the Transport Knowledge Transfer Network and a hydrogen project called H2ME. Clients named include British Gas and the Environment Agency.
The company is headquartered in Loughborough, Leicestershire, and the Low Carbon Vehicle event brings it into contact with the wider motoring industry at Millbrook. We did not find a list of other UK offices, so we have not named any. The connected and autonomous vehicle event shows that its interests reach beyond electric cars to self-driving technology, but we read nothing detailed on that work.
The profile quotes team members including Rob Anderson, who led programmes and communications and was lead assessor for the energy scheme, Amrit Chandan, a technical specialist in low-carbon vehicles, and Steven Carroll, a senior technical specialist. The team emphasised real-world demonstrations and practical results, with a focus on cost-effective savings, and said low-carbon vehicles should be an economic choice rather than a 'tick box'. These are the company's own words from around 2015, so they may have changed.
Jobs at an organisation like Cenex include engineers and technical specialists who test vehicles and chargers, data analysts, consultants who advise fleets and councils, project managers, event organisers, and communications and finance staff. Engineering, energy, maths, data and business subjects are all common backgrounds. Check the Cenex website for current vacancies.
