A UK second-hand retailer that buys, sells and exchanges video games, phones, computers and electronics, with hundreds of stores across the UK.

About CeX

CeX is a British retailer of pre-owned technology and entertainment. It buys, sells and exchanges video games and consoles, mobile phones, computers, tablets, TVs, DVDs, Blu-rays and music. Customers can sell items for cash or a voucher. Second-hand goods come with a five-year warranty, subject to terms. It also repairs games consoles through its Tech Centre, and runs Designer Exchange, which buys luxury bags and jewellery.

CeX started in London in 1992 as the Computer Exchange, with its first shop on Whitfield Street near Tottenham Court Road. The name later became Complete Entertainment Exchange. The founders named by Wikipedia include Paul Farrington, Robert Dudani, Hugh Man, Charlie Brooker, Oli Smith and Oliver Ball. Brooker designed the logo and drew early adverts. The company began franchising in 2005, so some shops are run independently under the CeX name. We did not find a formal mission statement or values on the pages we read.

Wikipedia lists the head office as Watford, Hertfordshire, while a data page lists London, so check the current address. CeX reports about 393 UK stores as at May 2025, though a second table in the same article gives 391. It also has stores in countries including Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Italy, and began franchising in 2005. It employed 2,633 people in 2023, not counting franchise store staff. David Mullins is chairman and David Butler managing director.

The business grew from a single London shop into a nationwide high-street chain, with 619 locations worldwide listed for 2025, and its Tech Centre and delivery service through JustEat, launched in March 2025, show it adding new services. No culture description was found on the pages we read. Store life is built around talking to customers, valuing and testing second-hand goods and knowing a lot about games and gadgets, so enthusiasm for technology is a strong plus. The company also pays out in vouchers redeemable in any CeX shop, which keeps the cycle of buying and selling going.

Jobs include shop assistants and managers, buyers and testers, repair technicians in the Tech Centre, online and warehouse teams, and head-office staff in areas such as buying, finance and technology. Shops are in towns and cities across the UK, so many roles are close to where you live. Reuse is also a selling point, because second-hand goods keep working products in use for longer.
