The UK's publicly owned, commercially funded public service broadcaster, behind Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4 and its streaming service.
Channel 4 is a UK television broadcaster that began scheduled broadcasting on 2 November 1982. It runs Channel 4, E4, E4 Extra, More4, Film4 and 4seven, plus an on-demand service that was renamed simply Channel 4 in April 2023. Its first programme was Countdown, and it is known for programmes such as Big Brother, The Great British Bake Off, Dispatches and Channel 4 News, which is supplied by ITN. The first programme ever shown was the quiz Countdown, and the channel has long been associated with Brookside, Big Brother and Four Weddings and a Funeral, which came from its film arm.
Its public service remit calls for a broad range of high quality and diverse programming, including innovation, creativity and programmes that appeal to a culturally diverse society. It is publicly owned but receives no public funding, relying mainly on advertising. Channel Four Television Corporation is a public corporation owned through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Its in-house agency 4Creative has created the channel's on-screen look, including the 2015 presentation package. We did not find a short mission slogan, so the remit wording above is the nearest to a mission.
Channel 4 has a national headquarters in the Majestic building in Leeds and a London headquarters at 124 Horseferry Road. It also has creative hubs in Manchester, Glasgow and Bristol, and its 4Talent editorial bases are in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Belfast. That spread across the nations and regions is a distinctive feature of how it is organised. Stuart Cosgrove has been named as its director of nations and regions, based in Glasgow. Its Leeds national headquarters was announced after the city beat Manchester and Birmingham, with around 200 staff expected to relocate.
Until 2026 Channel 4 was a publisher-broadcaster, meaning it commissioned shows from independent production companies rather than making them. The 2024 Media Act lets it make some of its own programmes, with at least 35% still made by independents. 4Talent coordinates talent development schemes for film, television, radio and new media. Alex Mahon stepped down as chief executive in summer 2025, with Jonathan Allan as interim.
The jobs here include commissioning, marketing, data, digital product, legal, finance and news-related roles, and the independent producers it works with employ many more. We have not researched careers pages, so check Channel 4's own website for current vacancies and for its latest leadership and structure.
