Charles Taylor

A London-founded insurance services group (founded 1884) that provides loss adjusting, claims handling and insurance technology to insurers around the world.

About Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor provides services to the insurance industry rather than selling policies to the public. Its three divisions are Claims Solutions (adjusting, third-party administration, assistance and technical services), InsureTech (software and digital tools for insurers, brokers and managing agents) and Insurance Management (running insurance programmes on long-term partnerships). A loss adjuster is the professional who investigates a claim and works out what is owed, and Charles Taylor adjusts across aviation, marine, natural resources, property, casualty and specialty lines.

The company's own history says it started in 1884 in north-east England, when the Standard Steamship Owners' Protection and Indemnity Association engaged Charles Taylor, described as a trusted coal merchant, to manage the shipowners' funds and claims. It later formed or managed mutual insurers, built its loss adjusting business in the 2000s, was appointed by Lloyd's to manage static claims, and expanded into insurance technology from 2013. Recent additions include Aegis, Matrix, Fraudkeeper and M3 Aviation Services.

In the UK, its London operation moved to The Minster Building in the City insurance district in 2017. UK job listings on its careers site show claims and liability adjuster roles based in London, and a UK TPA (claims management) service sits within its offer. Charles Taylor says it has about 4,000 experts in more than 100 countries on six continents. We did not find a full UK office list or UK-only headcount.

The company has no single mission line on its About page, but it says "Our values define who we are, what we stand for and how we behave" and highlights four strengths: specialist expertise, trusted partnerships built on long-term personal relationships, powerful technology and global reach. It describes itself as an "agile, growing business" where employees can make a significant impact, and says 9 in 10 employees recommend it as a great place to work. That figure is its own claim.

The mix of services means a wide range of jobs: loss adjusters, average adjusters (specialists in marine losses), forensic accountants, marine and scientific consultants, engineers, claims handlers, software and data specialists, and business operations staff. Many of these trades are rarely taught in school, so it is a good example of the hidden careers behind insurance. Its careers site is the place to see what is currently open.
