About Chaucer Group

Chaucer is a specialty insurance and reinsurance group. It works with brokers, coverholders and clients to protect business activities around the world, and it writes business through Lloyd's and through its own company markets. Syndicate 1084 covers casualty, energy, marine, political and property risks, and Syndicate 1176 insures physical damage to civil nuclear power stations, where it describes itself as a leading insurer.

Chaucer's tagline is "We find a way". It says its purpose is to protect and enable business growth for brokers, coverholders and clients, and it describes its approach as enterprising and bespoke, shaped by the character, experience and imagination of its teams. It puts claims at the centre of its work, treating each policy as a promise to help when things go wrong.

Chaucer is a member of China Re Group, a national reinsurer in China with its headquarters in Beijing. We did not find a founding date or early history on the page we read. Because the history was not on the page, read the rest of the Chaucer website before an interview. What the page does show is the shape of the group today: a London-run Lloyd's business with a parent that is one of the biggest reinsurers in Asia, which gives staff a view of how insurance works across several continents.

Its UK headquarters is in London, and it also lists UK offices in Ipswich and Manchester. Outside the UK it has locations in Bermuda, Singapore, Dubai, Copenhagen, Sydney and Dublin, and a hub in Miami. Chaucer Insurance Company DAC, based in Ireland, writes business through branches in London, Copenhagen and Bermuda. The company says it has more than 670 employees worldwide and more than 250 specialist underwriters.

The leadership team named on the site is based in London. It includes Richard Milner as chief executive, Nicola Stacey as chief underwriting officer, James Wright as chief financial officer, Werner Joubert as chief risk officer, Hayley Spink as chief operating officer, Karen Reid as group chief people officer and Phil Hamer as group general counsel. Beyond underwriters, a business of this kind employs claims specialists, syndicate and group reporting finance staff, risk and compliance professionals, and operations and technology teams. Job listings found in our search included syndicate reporting and corporate finance manager roles in London, which shows how much accountancy and finance work sits behind the underwriting.
