CITB

The Construction Industry Training Board, which helps employers train a skilled construction workforce across England, Scotland and Wales, based in Peterborough.

About CITB

CITB, the Construction Industry Training Board, is the body that works to make sure Britain's construction industry has enough skilled, qualified people. It encourages people into construction, develops training and skills frameworks, supports employers who train their workers, works with partners across the sector, and represents and influences the industry. It can collect a levy from construction employers, which is then used to support training, and it uses a process called Consensus to keep industry backing for the way the levy works. It covers England, Scotland and Wales, and a partner organisation, CITB Northern Ireland, covers Northern Ireland.

CITB was set up on 21 July 1964 under the Industrial Training Act. In 1966 its first training centre opened at Bircham Newton in Norfolk, and over the years it ran training centres in places such as Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Derbyshire and Kent, which together formed the National Construction College. Construction employers voted to keep the levy system in 1989. Today it is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions, which means it manages its own budget and work but answers to government and Parliament.

In its own words, CITB's purpose is to ensure a skilled, competent and inclusive construction workforce, and its aim is to attract people to the industry, develop their skills and help build a better Britain. Its four stated values are collaborative, consistent, accountable and inclusive. It describes inclusion as a commitment not to leave anyone behind and to include all groups.

CITB's headquarters moved to Peterborough in 2017, and its registered address is 4 Cyrus Way, Cygnet Park, Hampton, Peterborough. The pages we read did not give staff numbers or list other offices, so we cannot say how many people work there or where else they are based. Because it serves three nations, its work involves talking to employers, colleges and training providers across Great Britain.

People at CITB work on understanding what skills the industry needs, building standards and qualifications, running grants and funding for employers, supporting apprenticeships and careers promotion, collecting and managing the levy, and the data, finance, policy, communications, digital and human resources work that supports all that. If you care about helping other people get started in a career, or about how a whole industry trains its workforce, CITB shows what that looks like at national scale. Its website has a jobs section with more on what staff do.
