Clear Channel UK

A major UK out-of-home advertising company, best known for Adshel bus stops and digital roadside screens across the country.

About Clear Channel UK

Clear Channel UK is one of the UK's largest out-of-home media owners. Its own About page says it has more than 40,000 sites (an article on its site says 30,000, so the figure varies by how sites are counted) in places from Inverness to Truro. It is best known for Adshel bus stops, and its products include classic Adshel 6-sheet posters, digital formats such as Adshel Live and supermarket and shopping-mall screens, and large-format digital billboards called Storm and Wrap. It says its network reaches 91 per cent of UK adults every two weeks.

We did not find a formal mission statement. The company describes itself on its site as a "Platform for Brands" and also a "Platform for Good", and its website says it aims to help brands meet people "throughout the UK" while improving the local communities where its street furniture stands. In 2023 it says it delivered over 70 pro-bono campaigns for charities and social good organisations.

Clear Channel UK says it has 14 locations across the UK. Its About page says more than 650 staff create and post adverts, sell advertising and clean and maintain street furniture, and that it is led by chief executive Justin Cochrane and a team covering finance, commercial, sales, technology, people, operations and creative. Because the work is physical as well as creative, the company employs depot and field teams as well as office-based staff.

On environmental responsibility, it says all its offices and depots are ISO 14001 accredited, that 99.8 per cent of its waste avoids landfill, and that it has cut carbon emissions by 83 per cent since 2008. It works with advertisers, agencies, landlords and local authorities, and its About page says its aim is to partner with them and improve local communities. These are the company's own claims and we did not find independent confirmation of them.

Roles at a company like this include sales and account teams who work with advertisers and agencies, planners and creative staff, technology and data teams who run its digital screens, operations and maintenance staff who look after the sites, and finance and people teams. To prepare, students can build skills in communication and numbers, and notice how outdoor advertising works in their own towns, because that curiosity helps in sales and planning roles.
