A London start-up, founded in 2018, that fits sensors to concrete mixer trucks and uses data to cut wasted concrete and the carbon emissions that come with it.
Cloud Cycle, also written CloudCycle, makes technology for the ready-mix concrete industry. Ready-mix is concrete mixed at a plant and delivered in a lorry. The company fits an internet-connected sensor device in the mixer truck. The data goes to a cloud platform that uses machine learning to predict the condition of the concrete when it arrives, and an AI assistant suggests or triggers adjustments so the load meets its specification. The goal is that fewer loads are rejected or wasted. A planned second stage would match surplus concrete with nearby demand.
Founder Phill White has a construction background. In a Startups magazine feature he described leaving his career and starting a circular economy business, an oyster mushroom farm that grew mushrooms on coffee waste, before a conversation with the managing director of a large concrete company led to Cloud Cycle. His co-founder has a more technical focus. The company's own description is that it is revolutionising the ready-mix industry by digitising concrete, which it says improves quality and cuts costs, waste and carbon dioxide emissions. The article points out that concrete accounts for about eight per cent of global emissions and says around 500 million tonnes are wasted each year.
Cloud Cycle was founded in 2018 and is London-based. It joined Antler's first London cohort and received help from the Carbon Trust's accelerator and from Circular London. Built In London lists it with 18 employees and says people work from a physical office. A 2021 list of UK construction start-ups names it among the sector's rising companies, with the stated aim of cutting industry costs and reducing global emissions by one per cent. The sources do not name UK customers; they say it was piloting with two of the world's largest cement companies, with plans to grow first in Europe.
The sources say little about culture. The Startups magazine piece, written when the team had just two founders, said they were hiring around six roles, including a deep learning lead, a data scientist, a customer success lead, a firmware lead and a software developer. Built In London's profile does not describe values. The earliest stage of any start-up tends to give people wide responsibility, but that is our observation, not a company claim.
Jobs at a company like this cover embedded and firmware engineering, machine learning and data science, software development, and customer success staff who work with concrete producers and drivers. The company also needs people with a feel for how concrete plants run, such as technical managers and quality specialists. If you like electronics, data, sustainability and practical industries, this is an example of how they combine. Check Cloud Cycle's website for current information, since our newest sources are a few years old.
