A partner-owned London firm of chartered surveyors and property consultants whose roots go back to 1765, working on residential and commercial property across the UK.
Cluttons is a firm of chartered surveyors and property consultants based in Central London. According to Wikipedia, it offers both residential and commercial property services and works across the UK. It is described as private and owned by its partners, which means the people who work at senior level share in the business. Surveyors give independent advice on what property is worth, how it should be managed and what can be done with it, for owners ranging from families to large estates.
Its roots are old. The firm traces itself to 1765, when William Clutton took over his father-in-law's surveying business in Sussex. His grandson John Clutton, who was born in 1809, set up the London business in 1837 and was a joint founder and first president of the Surveyors' Association, which became the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. In 1992 Robin Paterson formed Cluttons London Residential Agency, and in 1997 the firm merged with Daniel Smith, a partnership founded in 1775. It became a limited liability partnership on 1 April 2005.
We could not find a mission statement or values page for Cluttons in the sources we read, so we have not invented one. A history page for the related firm RH and RW Clutton celebrates 275 years, showing how much pride the family name carries, but that is a different business and we have not used it for facts about Cluttons.
The firm's headquarters is on Portman Street, London. Wikipedia names James Gray as Managing Partner and says Cluttons employs about 250 people (as at 2022). Wikipedia also gives conflicting information on its Middle East business, saying both that it has representation across the Gulf and that the business was sold to Savills in 2018, so we have left the Middle East out. Cluttons is small enough that people often work closely with senior partners.
Jobs at a firm like this include residential and commercial agents, valuers, building surveyors, estate and property managers, and the administrators, finance and marketing staff who support them. Geography, maths, economics, history and business studies can all lead towards this work. Cluttons' own website is the place to check for current roles and its present structure. Because the firm has been through changes in ownership structure in recent years, it is worth confirming its current make-up directly with the firm.
