A London-headquartered business network company, founded in 1992, that provides fibre, data-centre, cloud and voice connections to businesses across the UK, Europe and Asia.
Colt Technology Services provides the connections that large organisations rely on. Its website lists dark fibre (cable reserved for one customer), high-speed wavelengths, IP transit, Ethernet and dedicated internet access, along with network as a service, SD-WAN (software that manages traffic between sites), secure network services, cloud connectivity, and voice and collaboration products such as SIP trunking and contact centre as a service. It says it has more than 1,100 connected data centres, more than 230 connected cities, over 250 cloud on-ramps worldwide and over 32,000 connected buildings. Customers named on its site include a film festival and a Japanese broadcaster.
The business began in London in 1992 as City of London Telecommunications, founded by James Hynes, and the name Colt comes from that. It won a licence in 1993 to compete with British Telecom and Cable and Wireless, listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1996, and expanded into major European cities. According to Wikipedia, the company is now owned by Fidelity, grew into Asia through the 2014 purchase of KVH, and agreed to acquire the European, Middle Eastern and African business of Lumen Technologies in 2022. We did not find a mission or values statement on the pages we could read.
Colt is headquartered in London, according to Wikipedia, and it began by building its first fibre network in the capital. A press item on its website, in search results, refers to Colt House as a headquarters in the heart of London's tech hub, which we could not read in full. The company is a multinational business with customers in Europe, the US and Asia, so many of its roles are international, but it has a clear London base. Wikipedia names Keri Gilder as chief executive and Michael Wilens as chairman. The pages we read did not say where its other UK offices and network sites are.
On culture, we found no company statements to quote, so we cannot describe what working there is like. Its website does include a section called Our People, but without detail. A reasonable way to learn more is to look at the people pages of its website and to ask staff at careers events about team sizes and ways of working. The business serves demanding customers in areas such as finance and media, where speed and reliability matter, which tends to shape the work.
Jobs at Colt include network engineers who design and run the fibre and IP network, field and data-centre technicians, software and automation developers, security specialists, solution designers and sales engineers who work out what a customer needs, project managers, and finance, legal and people staff. Physics, electronics, computing and engineering subjects are common starting points. The company's own website lists current roles.
