Conjecture

A London AI safety company building a new AI architecture aimed at making advanced AI controllable and safe.

About Conjecture

Conjecture is an AI safety company based in London. Its stated mission is "building a new AI architecture to ensure the controllable, safe development of advanced AI technology". It says it works at the frontier of technology, on the question of how to build powerful AI that people can understand and keep under control.

Its team works in person four days a week at an office in central London, and the company sponsors visas and offers relocation support. When hiring, it says it looks for exceptional people who are self-starters with a strong drive, a track record of getting real things done and the ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing responsibilities. Candidates do not need previous AI safety experience, although familiarity with recent AI advances helps.

The career page we read does not describe specific products, founders or research details, and links to separate research and product sections. Wikipedia pages in the search results link Conjecture with Connor Leahy and with the policy group ControlAI, but we have not read those pages, so we have not described the relationship.

Conjecture's research pages include essays and proposals on AI, such as a proposal for international coordination on advanced AI. As an AI safety organisation, its work is about long-term risks as well as practical engineering.

For young people, Conjecture is a window into the field of AI safety. Careers draw on computer science, mathematics, machine learning, policy and operations. Because the company is small and specialised, we recommend reading its research and checking its careers page to see whether it hires at entry level, as early-careers programmes are not described. We have left out funding.
