A London architecture and interior design practice founded by Sir Terence Conran and Fred Roche, working on hotels, homes, workplaces and heritage buildings, and now part of DLR Group.
Conran and Partners is an architecture and interior design practice that describes its work as award-winning buildings and spaces that aim to be progressive and sustainable. It began in London in the 1980s as a multidisciplinary firm founded by Sir Terence Conran and Fred Roche. Its early projects included restaurants, the masterplan and phased design of Butler's Wharf on the Thames, and the original Design Museum building. It also worked on retail and restaurant ventures linked to Habitat, The Conran Shop and many Conran restaurants.
The practice describes itself as defined by creativity, rigour and an understanding of how to add value at every stage. It researches each site's heritage, context and culture and uses those stories to shape materials, layouts and identity. It says it puts the end user at the centre and thinks about wellbeing, sustainability and how people live and work, with the aim of spaces that are both beautiful and timeless. Its services run from strategy and concept design through to technical drawings, furniture and fittings, art curation and on-site support.
The studio has offices in London and Hong Kong, and its work spans the UK, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Its sectors include luxury hotels and resorts (clients include Hyatt, The Peninsula Hotels and Taj), branded and luxury residential, build-to-rent apartments, workplace and co-working, heritage and adaptive reuse, and restaurants and retail. Developers it has worked with include Almacantar, British Land, Related Argent and Swire Properties. The studio page we read says it has joined DLR Group, a global integrated design firm, but we did not read the details.
On ownership and people, the page says that in 2022 ownership passed to five principals: Tina Norden, Simon Kincaid, Tim Bowder-Ridger, Sebastian Conran and Katy Clarke, all of whom, it says, had held key roles in the practice for many years. It describes a talented team that balances imaginative design with technical precision, and says it can work either as lead design consultant or as part of a wider project team. These are the practice's own words. The page does not give staff numbers.
A studio of this kind employs architects and interior designers, people who specify furniture, finishes and lighting, visualisers, technical designers who produce the detailed drawings, and communications, finance and operations staff. If you like both buildings and interiors, or you are interested in hotel and home design, it is worth looking at how an architecture practice can also think about styling and the feel of a room. The practice's own website shows its current projects and any vacancies.
