About Cornerstone (CTIL)

Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Limited, usually called Cornerstone or CTIL, owns and manages passive mobile infrastructure: the masts, rooftops and other structures that hold the antennas and equipment of mobile networks. It reports about 14,200 macro sites (large masts) and roughly 1,400 micro sites (smaller installations), and trade reports describe it as the UK's biggest passive infrastructure operator. It does not run a mobile network itself. It provides the physical sites that the networks of Vodafone and Virgin Media O2 rely on.

The company was set up as a joint venture between Vodafone UK and Telefonica UK, which is now Virgin Media O2, to share the cost of mast infrastructure rather than duplicate it. Under long-term service agreements it is the preferred supplier of new sites for both operators, and one report spoke of plans to add 1,200 new sites by 2025. We could not read a Cornerstone-written mission statement, so we cannot quote one. Its public job is clear enough: keeping the structures behind everyday mobile coverage safe, maintained and available.

Cornerstone works in towns and countryside across the UK. The clearest evidence of that is the stream of planning consultation letters it sends to town and parish councils for upgrades and new masts, such as those published by councils in Kettering, Shrewsbury, Wroughton, Bembridge and elsewhere. Those documents show a UK-wide team that works with local communities and councils as well as engineers. We did not find an office address or headcount in the sources we could read, so we cannot say where its people are based.

As for culture, we found no company-written pages about values or working life, and we will not guess. What the public record does show is a business that deals with neighbours and local councils as often as with mobile operators. Anyone working there needs to explain technical plans in plain language, whether that means describing why a mast needs upgrading or how an extra antenna will improve coverage in a village. The work also involves health and safety, because masts are structures that engineers climb and inspect.

A company like this employs surveyors and planners who prepare applications, engineers who design and upgrade sites, project and contract managers who run building works, and people in property, legal, finance and customer teams. If you like geography, construction, engineering, planning or the idea of working on the unseen structures that keep phones connected, this is the kind of organisation to look at.
