About Countingup

Countingup is an app that puts business banking, bookkeeping, accounting and tax in one place for self-employed people and small businesses. Its products include a business account, Tax Pots (a way to set money aside for tax), VAT filing, company registration and an Accountant Hub for accountants. It says it serves over 100,000 UK small businesses and has processed more than £10 billion in transactions, which are its own figures.

It was founded in 2017 by a team of industry experts led by Tim Fouracre, a former chief executive of Clearbooks, who saw self-employed people losing time to paperwork. It is based in London: its registered office is at 20-22 Wenlock Road, N1, and its careers page says the headquarters is in West London, with most roles hybrid. Tom Platt is the current chief executive. The leadership team on its about page also includes Angus Reid (chief operating officer) and Mike Moate (chief technology officer). The bank accounts are provided by Griffin Bank Ltd, which is authorised and regulated in the UK, and the company names Gresham House Ventures, ING, Molten and Sage among its backers.

Countingup says its mission is to give small business owners "the time to focus on what they love", and its vision is to shape the future of finance for the self-employed through technology. Its stated values are saving customers time on admin, saving them money through accounting tools and tax tips, and offering one app in place of several separate tools.

The main products are the business account built into the app, automatic bookkeeping of money in and out, tax tools such as VAT filing and tax pots, and company registration for people starting a limited company. Sage, one of its backers, is also a well-known UK accounting software firm.

On its careers page, Countingup describes "The Countingup Way": doing excellent work, enjoying the job and following through. Benefits listed include an 8% employer pension contribution, share options, a home-office setup contribution, flexible working, 26 days' holiday plus bank holidays and enhanced parental leave. The hiring process is typically a call with the talent team, a competency interview and a cultural fit interview, sometimes with a technical test. The page showed no open roles when we read it and no early-careers programme, but says people can email a CV to jobs@countingup.com. These are the company's own descriptions.
