About Covéa Insurance

Covéa Insurance plc is the UK subsidiary of Covéa, a French mutual insurance group formed from GMF, MAAF and MMA and headquartered in Paris. In the UK it sells home, motor and commercial insurance, including private car, motor breakdown and cover for small and medium-sized businesses and regional mid-market companies. Its group also includes Covéa Life Limited and Sterling Client Services Limited.

Covéa Insurance describes its aim as to "help protect people against the worst happening, and put it right if it does." It says it is building a strong UK business for long-term, sustainable growth, with an emphasis on service. Its website does not list a set of named values.

The registered office for its UK companies is at A&B Mills, Dean Clough, Halifax, which is also its largest office. Covéa Insurance was formed in October 2012 when the group merged three UK insurers: Provident Insurance, MMA Insurance and Gateway Insurance. Sterling Insurance was added in 2015, and the Swinton brokerage was sold to the Ardonagh Group in 2018. It serves about 1.2 million UK policyholders and holds an S&P A+ stable rating, according to its website and Wikipedia. A 2019 summary said it had nearly 2,000 UK employees across seven English offices, and a 2014 press release said about 525 people worked in Halifax then, so those figures are dated. We did not find a current headcount. The 2014 release said the Halifax team was expected to grow from 525 to 650 by 2016, and that over 40 people had been recruited in the previous year for a home claims operation brought in-house on 1 April.

Covéa's chief executive in 2014, James Reader, said "Halifax is a great location for our business, and one we are firmly committed to," and the company has spoken about creating new local jobs in West Yorkshire. Its careers pages mention diversity and inclusion, flexible working, and graduate and apprenticeship programmes, but we did not read the detail. Georges de Macedo became chief executive in June 2023.

The business needs people to sell and administer policies, handle motor and home claims, assess commercial risks, price products, support brokers, and provide finance, legal, compliance and technology. A large Halifax base also means Yorkshire is a real option if you want a career in insurance outside London or the South. Ask the company which teams are based in Halifax and which are elsewhere.
